2021 OA Week: Events list

Join the Iowa State University Library this October for a week full of Open Access (OA) events and workshops. Attendees will network with OA campus leaders, learn about available channels to publish work openly, and discover free services that can help guide them on the path to open scholarship. Whether you’re an OA all-star or just getting started, OA Week will equip you with a wealth of information and resources you need to succeed.

Keynote: Preprints and the Evolution of Scholarly Publishing with Dr. Richard Sever

Richard Sever is Assistant Director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York and Co-Founder of the preprint servers bioRxiv and medRxiv. He also serves as Executive Editor for the Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives and Cold Spring Harbor Protocols journals, and launched the precision medicine journal Cold Spring Harbor Molecular Case Studies. 

After receiving a degree in Biochemistry from Oxford University, Richard obtained his PhD at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK. He then moved into editorial work, first as an editor at Current Opinion in Cell Biology and later Trends in Biochemical Sciences. He subsequently served as Executive Editor of Journal of Cell Science, before moving to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in 2008. 

Shameless Self-Promotion: Share Your Research to Make an Impact

Learn how to showcase your skills by sharing your research and leveraging popular social networks used by academics and researchers: ResearchGate, Academia, Humanities Commons, and Twitter. In addition to social networks, you will learn how to take advantage of tools like ORCID and the ISU Digital Repository to increase the impact of your work. This workshop is a great introduction for early career researchers, graduate students, and anyone else interested in learning how to meet peers and share their work online. This is a beginner-level workshop; no prior experience is needed.

Open Scholar Café - Preprints at Iowa State University

At this month's cafe, we'll host a short presentation and open discussion about preprint publishing at ISU. Eric Schares, Engineering & Collection Analysis Librarian, will begin by sharing data on preprint publishing trends at ISU, before we dive into a broader, community-driven discussion about preprints supported by you and faculty experts. Did you attend Dr. Sever's talk and want to learn more about preprints? Join us to learn more about why some researchers have chosen to share their preprints, and how you can navigate sharing preprints of your own work!

Monsters in the M-Shop: Public Domain Movie Night

6:00pm - 8:00pm

Close out Open Access week with some fun!  Watch two science fiction, public domain movies, The Wasp Woman (1959) and A Trip to the Moon (1902), at the Maintenance Shop, in the Memorial Union. Movies Not Rated. Doors open at 5:30pm.

The first ten people to arrive in costume win a $5 ISU Dining gift card. Free popcorn and beverages will be provided.
